Description
After The Russian Revolution, Alexandra Feodorovna's rich jewelry collection became a kind of a financial safety cushion for the last imperial family. The Empress came up with a secret code name for mentioning jewelry. When in the letters of 1917 and 1918 she asked to "pack the pharmacy better" or "take care of medicines", she meant her jewelry. This was recalled by the nursemaid Alexandra (Shura) Tegeleva. Before the Romanovs moved to the Ipatiev house, Shura helped sew precious stones into the Grand duchesses' bras, hats and jacket buttons. However, grand Romanov tiaras, necklaces, devant de corsages, etc. remained hidden in Tobolsk until 1933. A nun of the St. John of Tobolsk Monastery, Marfa Uzhintseva, who was responsible for preserving the jewels for at least ten years, was interrogated by the Bolsheviks. "When I had these valuables, I did not unfold them and did not look at them. But probing through the paper showed that there were Imperial head ornaments, obviously with precious stones, a breast star and a number of other small pieces. I don't think the imperial family would wear any rubbish, so I believe that there were important valuables there," said Uzhintseva. According to the inventory of experts (one of whom was illiterate and signed the document with three X's), a total of five tiaras were found. Another tiara, noticeable in some photos, may be mentioned in the list as a "diamond head rim" for 600 rubles. This piece was not only broken, but also deprived of its diamond briolettes. The tiara was not custom-made piece for the Empress, but was obviously made in the second half of the 19th century by Oscar Massin. The further fate of the Romanov treasure is not exactly known, but an important private collection contains a similar briolette tiara from the same workshopSo how can you know when your beautiful piece will arrive?
